As Shenzhen prepares to host the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, economic relations between Guangdong Province and Thailand are undergoing a profound structural realignment, Chaowchai Jiemvijid, Member of the Working Committee on China at the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand, told Southin an exclusive interview.

He pointed out a gradual shift in the region's economic partnership, which is evolving from traditional agricultural trade into sophisticated high-tech and supply chain integration.

"APEC is a really important platform for Shenzhen and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) to open further to the world, and to show the world Shenzhen's development achievements," Jiemvijid said.

Historically anchored by commodity trade, Guangdong has long served as China's primary gateway for Thai agriculture. Wholesale hubs like Guangzhou's Jiangnan Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market handle the vast majority of Thailand's durian exports, making traditional trade a vital contributor to Thailand's GDP.

Yet, driven by rapid technological advances, Chinese EV pioneers like BYD, Changan and Geely have established a strong presence in Thailand.

This transition reflects a broader realignment where Guangdong is positioning its industrial technology at the heart of Southeast Asian manufacturing.

"What we would like to have is for these Chinese companies not just to carry out assembly manufacturing, but to build a complete supply chain," Jiemvijid emphasized, noting that technology transfer is essential for mutual benefit. He added that strategic guidance from Guangdong could also help Thailand's 700,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) access the Chinese market.

Jiemvijid also highlighted that Thailand's strategic value extends far beyond its domestic consumer base. With Thailand positioned as a gateway to ASEAN's nearly 700 million people—and a bridge toward South Asia—the country's deepening "Guangdong Tech + Thai Production" model, bolstered by the APEC and RCEP frameworks, is set to redefine regional supply chains for the decade ahead.
