On June 25, the Hurun Research Institute released the Global Unicorn Index 2026 in Guangzhou. China ranked second globally with 381 unicorn companies.

ByteDance—the parent company of Doubao—ranked third on the list with a valuation of 3.3 trillion yuan. Newly crowned unicorn DeepSeek entered the world’s top 15 unicorns with a valuation of 340 billion yuan. China’s unicorn companies are primarily concentrated in the fields of semiconductors, artificial intelligence, life sciences and new energy. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) had a total of 80 unicorn companies on the list. Among them, Shenzhen was home to 44 unicorns, ranking sixth among global cities, while Guangzhou had 24 unicorns, ranking 12th worldwide.
