On August 15, 2024, the City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan) welcomed its first cohort of undergraduate students.
This year, CityU (DG) has introduced four undergraduate programs: Computer Science and Technology, Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Energy and Power Engineering. The university is open to students from ten provinces, including autonomous regions and municipalities directly governed by the central government in China. Admission is based on performance in the College Entrance Examination (CEE).
"I am thrilled to be the first student to register. I have a preliminary plan for my university studies: I want to build a solid foundation and participate in programming competitions. In my junior and senior years, I will focus more on algorithms and conduct research in the lab. I hope to realize my dream at CityU (DG)," a student surnamed Guo from Henan Province said.
"Dongguan is emerging as a hub for scientific and technological innovation and manufacturing, with Songshan Lake as a key engine of development. It is home to significant research facilities, including the Chinese Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) and the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory, as well as leading industry players like Huawei," said Li Yi, Chair Professor at CityU (DG), "In the future, we will leverage local resources, collaborate with research bases and enterprises for teaching and research, and enable students to participate in various joint research projects conducted by the university and industry to support their growth and development."
In 2020, the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) signed a cooperative education agreement with the Dongguan Municipal People's Government and the Dongguan University of Technology to establish the City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan) as an independent legal entity within Songshan Lake Science City. On April 16, 2024, the Ministry of Education officially approved the establishment of City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan), marking a collaborative educational initiative between mainland China and Hong Kong.
