On March 12, the opening ceremony of the second Hengqin Nature Week and a tree planting event were held at the Tianmu River Rowing Park in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. The event will be held from March 12 to 26, with seven major themed activities covering voluntary tree planting, ancient tree protection, bird protection, biodiversity exhibition, nature photography, nature carnival, and nature classes, showcasing the natural resources and ecological protection achievements in the cooperation zone.

This Hengqin Nature Week launched the "10,000 Trees Project" for the first time, with the goal of planting 10,000 saplings during the event and planting no fewer than 100,000 saplings throughout the year in 2024. The project encourages all people to participate in voluntary tree planting, incorporating the concept of "getting close to nature and respecting nature".

A total of 15 tree planting activities are arranged for this year's event. Compared with the last session, the second Hengqin Nature Week will invite more Macao residents, including students, newly-married couples, and families with children, to Hengqin to participate in tree planting activities. There are also nature photography, nature classes, and other activities open to Macao residents.

Luo Huabing, director of the Ecological Environment Department of the Urban Planning and Construction Bureau of the Cooperation Zone, said that since the establishment of the cooperation zone, Hengqin's ecological environment has been improving and has achieved remarkable results in biodiversity protection.

As of the end of 2023, Hengqin's survey recorded as many as 240 species of wild birds, an increase of 54 species compared to before the establishment of the cooperation zone, which reflects the effectiveness of ecological and environmental protection in recent years.
