The "Hong Kong Vehicles Heading North" policy is a key initiative by the central government to support Hong Kong's development and advance the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Since its implementation on July 1st, 2023, there has been a continuous increase in the number of Hong Kong residents driving single-plate private cars northward. By March 9th, 2023, at 21:00, the vehicle northbound clearance volume at the border inspection station of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Exit exceeded 500,000.

The "Hong Kong Vehicles Heading North" policy has notably widened the life radius and shortened the distance in terms of time and space, enhancing the ease of travel between Guangdong and Hong Kong for residents. Since the implementation of this policy, there has been a surge in appointment requests. According to border control statistics, as of now, over 48,700 drivers and more than 48,800 vehicles have completed the border control registration for heading north from Hong Kong.

With the customs environment and appointment system getting better, self-driving has turned into a top and easy way for Hong Kong residents to travel to and from the Chinese mainland. In February this year, the vehicle northbound clearance volume exceeded 100,000 for the first time in a single month, marking an increase of more than 1490% compared to the first month of the implementation of this policy.

Driving north has become a trend, with ports experiencing heightened activity during weekends and holidays. According to border control statistics, the daily average crossings of single-plate Hong Kong cars reached 5,400 during weekends and holidays this year, accounting for over 38% of the total car traffic at the port. Notably, on February 13th, the fourth day of the Chinese New Year, the highest daily traffic hit 8,300 crossings, setting a record since the implementation of the policy.
