Guangdong saw a total of 14.479 million tourist trips made during the three-day New Year holiday from December 30, 2023, to January 1, 2024, 78.1 percent up from the same period last year and 8.5 percent from 2019, according to the Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangdong Province. The tourism market generated 8.9 billion RMB in revenue, representing a year-on-year increase of 99.1 percent.

Short-distance trips gain popularity

The 150 key scenic spots in Guangdong received 2.956 million visits, an increase of 89.3 percent from last year. Various scenic areas held New Year-themed activities to add a festive atmosphere. For instance, Guangzhou Chimelong Tourist Resort hosted a gala and firework show, while Lingnan Impression Garden organized a traditional Chinese art carnival.

According to the Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangdong Province, short-distance family trips were particularly favored during the holiday, with cities promoting themed activities such as city outskirts exploration, countryside tours, and folk cultural tours. The province also launched 22 winter-themed self-driving tour routes, focusing on hot springs, winter escape tourism, traditional customs, and festive events.

Furthermore, a diverse array of cultural activities took place as well during the three-day holiday. All 384 museums in the province were open to the public, offering cultural experience tours, over 2,000 New Year's exhibitions, and approximately 1,500 study activities. Additionally, a series of New Year concerts also graced stages across the province.

Notably, throughout the holiday, many cities in Guangdong sparked a travel and consumption frenzy through offering vouchers and free ticket discounts. The province will release 20 million RMB in cultural and tourism consumption vouchers by the end of January to further boost tourism and cultural consumption.

Guangzhou and Shenzhen become China's top tourism destinations during the holiday

The holiday kindled a boom in Guangdong's cities. According to data reports released by Ctrip, an online travel agency in China, Guangzhou and Shenzhen are among the top ten hottest domestic tourist destinations in the country during the New Year holiday.

Meanwhile, Shenzhen received a total of 2.3703 million domestic tourists over three days, with tourism revenue reaching 1.652 billion RMB, a year-on-year increase of 92.26 percent and 100.99 percent respectively.
