The 7th Basic Theory and Innovative Practice of Building Structures Forum was held in Guangzhou from December 9 to 11.

More than 700 architects, entrepreneurs, and academic experts from all around the world attended the event. The academicians included Zhou Fulin, Ou Jinping, Zhou Xuhong, Nie Jianguo, Du Xiuli, and Xing Feng from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Li Jie from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Billie F. Spencer, a foreign scholar from the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The theme of this Forum was "the basic theoretical research on building structures and the innovation and practice of structural design", which aims to make the construction industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area "intelligent, green, safe, high-quality, and sustainable", and provide expertise for the digital transformation of the AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) industry.

Wei Minghai, President of Guangzhou University, extended a warm welcome to all participating experts and scholars at the opening ceremony. He introduced the launch of innovation hubs, such as "Major Infrastructure Security + Smart Operation" in recent years, and achievements of the university's key disciplines, such as civil engineering.

Several guests gave keynote speeches respectively.

Billie F. Spencer gave a presentation entitled "Topology Optimization of Buildings Subjected to Random Excitations." He presented modeling, algorithms and procedures for structural topology optimization based on static, dynamic and random loads, as well as examples of optimization applications under different input conditions, such as earthquakes, wind and vehicle traffic loads.

Zhou Fulin, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the director of the Earthquake Engineering Research & Test Center of Guangzhou University, explained the domestic and overseas subway development trends and the requirements for subway vibration isolation with a large number of examples. He summarized the hazards of environmental vibration induced by urban subways, and proposed corresponding vibration control strategies.

The Forum set up ten parallel sessions at the same time. A total of 191 experts and scholars delivered speeches.

The Basic Theory and Innovative Practice of Building Structures Forum was initiated by the Journal of Building Structures and has been successfully held six times since 2010. The 7th Forum was co-organized by the Architectural Society of China, the Journal of Building Structures, and Guangzhou University.
