Global mayors exchange urban innovation solutions in Guangzhou

The 2023 Global Mayors' Forum & 6th Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation were held in Guangzhou from December 7 to 9. The three-day event brought together mayors from more than 60 cities around the world to explore innovative practices in urban management.

"The world is urbanizing very quickly, and today over 57 percent of the world's population lives in cities," said Siddharth Chatterjee, United Nations Resident Coordinator in China. He emphasized the importance of this event, where mayors can learn lessons from their experiences in Guangzhou. He also praised Guangzhou's approach to population expansion and aging.

Laila Iskander, Former Minister of State for Urban Renewal and Informal Settlements and Former Minister of State for Environmental Affairs in Egypt, noted an increasing interest in environmental development and the care economy for urban management.

Cansel Tuncer, Vice Mayor and General Secretary of Antalya, Türkiye, said she learned about technological and innovative work in Guangzhou, adding "We really would like to meet with these technological companies. And we also talk to our business association chamber of commerce in Antalya."

This event is a collaboration between the World Association of Major Metropolises, United Cities and Local Government (UCLG), and Guangzhou City.

The organizers of the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation announced five winners, which are Bogotá in Colombia, Chalandri in Greece, Gwangju in the Republic of Korea, Kampala in Uganda, and Xianning in China.

According to the organizers, the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation aims to promote the exchange of urban innovation and development experience, recognize cities and local governments for successful innovation and development promotion, advocate for a scientific approach to urban innovation and development, and promote sustainable development of cities worldwide.
