5 Zhuhai projects win awards at Entrepreneurs Cup

Zhuhai teams stood out among 22 finalists to win one grand, one gold, one silver, as well as two bronze awards in the online finals of the overseas returnees sci-tech division of the Guangdong Community Entrepreneurs Cup Entrepreneurship & Innovation Competition on Nov 21.

The overseas returnees sci-tech division, undertaken by Zhuhai Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, is one of the seven individual competitions of the Guangdong Community Entrepreneurs Cup Entrepreneurship & Innovation Competition, which began at the end of August. 

A total of 632 projects from the five competition areas of Zhuhai, Shenzhen, Shantou, Hong Kong, and Macao, as well as Taiwan were submitted. Among them, 158 were from Zhuhai and five stood out after the primary and semi-final rounds.

The R&D and industrialization of high-performance large-size monocrystalline silicon wafer project brought by Hengqin-headquartered Guangdong Gokin Solar won the grand award in the Enterprise Section. Ma Weiping, investment director of Guangdong Gokin Solar, noted that monocrystalline silicon wafer is vital to the photovoltaic industrial chain.

Ma added that Gokin's R&D team settled in Jinwan District in December 2020 and finished factory construction in only 140 days. The enterprise is projected to have an annual output value of over 14 billion yuan ($2 billion) in 2022, with the number expected to reach 35 billion yuan ($5 billion) upon operation of its Phase III factories. 

The micro intelligent robot developed by Zhuhai Fucheng Intelligent Medical Technology won a gold award. It utilizes artificial intelligence and self-developed system on chip (SoC) technology for digestive tract care. Yan Ming, founder of the Xiangzhou-based enterprise and researcher at the Zhuhai Fudan Innovation Institution, said that the robot can take pictures of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine after patients swallow it to realize early disease detection.

Wang Xiaohe, one of the competition judges and a renowned industrial financial expert, said that the two projects have showcased the city's power in developing the biomedicine and "smart" manufacturing industries.
