Statistics show great potential of advanced manufacturing in Greater Bay Area

In the first half of 2022, advanced manufacturing industry and high-tech manufacturing industry respectively took up 55.9 percent and 33.1 percent of the industrial added value above the designated size in 9 mainland cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), according to a press conference held by Department of Industry and Information Technology of Guangdong Province.

GBA has led in such fields as regional innovation capability, comprehensive development index of intellectual property rights, the amount of effective invention patents and PCT international patent applications for years in China.

“At present, the GBA has fostered a manufacturing industry and service industry that are of large scale and cover extensive fields,” said Wu Dongwen, Deputy Director General of the Department of Industry and Information Technology of Guangdong Province. “The service industry in Hong Kong and Macao is highly developed while the 9 mainland cities have achieved profound development in terms of emerging manufacturing industries such as the new generation of electronic information, green petrochemical, smart home appliances.”

Wu elaborated that the GBA will promote coordinated development through major projects. “For example, the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin creates opportunities for Macao to develop its industry diversely. More than 700 Macao-funded enterprises have been registered in the Zone over the past year since the Hengqin Plan was released in 2021.

In addition, Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone saw 11,900 Hong Kong-funded enterprises newly-registered and its GDP increased 10.5 percent year on year in 2021.

Wu unveiled that, Guangdong will continue to focus on the development of an advanced manufacturing industry in the next step and join hands with Hong Kong and Macao to attract more innovation resources, fin-tech industry and facilitate talent exchanges.
