“The relations between Mexico and China can date back 500 years,” said Jesús Seade, Mexican Ambassador to China, “Mexico and China have established a comprehensive strategic partnership”, which is the foundation of our bilateral relations.

Seade has a long relationship with China, especially with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, in which he has worked and lived for more than a decade.

In 2008, he was appointed Vice-President at Lingnan University in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and later held the position of Associate Vice-President for Global Affairs at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.

“The Greater Bay Area is now one of the most economically-vibrant and technologically-advanced regions in China,” said Seade. “We have a keen interest in collaboration with Guangdong in various areas” and “expect Guangdong to serve as the gateway to Sino-Mexican exchanges.”

According to Seade, Mexico and China have established and maintained exchanges in the field of economy, culture and trade since the 16th century. “For decades, we have been seeking a better way to deepen the relationships between us,” said Seade.

He suggested that the two countries should promote cultural exchanges on the societal level, expand cooperation among middle and small-sized enterprises, as well as facilitate exchanges between local governments.

Seade also thinks highly of China’s assistance in COVID-19 vaccine distribution. “Approximately 29 million Chinese vaccines have arrived in Mexico, accounting for a quarter of Mexico’s total vaccine doses.” In addition, according to Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico is the first Latin American country and the only one outside of China to fill and finish doses of the CanSino vaccine.

“The Sino-Mexican cooperation in the health care field is of importance and we expect more cooperation to be explored in other fields,” said Seade.
