On May 30, Nansha launched an urgent recruitment for 1,000 volunteers to assist the epidemic prevention and control. Hung Yat-hei from Hong Kong and Lau Ting-kam from Macao applied for the first time.

They all got vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccines, and participated in the volunteer work on June 5 after their applications were approved.

Both Mr. Hung and Mr. Lau were recruited as the first batch of civil servants from Hong Kong and Macao in Guangzhou, in April, 2020. Now it's their turn to work as volunteers for the society.

"Nansha gives me a sense of security, as a new native in this area, I hope to bring everyone a sense of security as well," said Mr. Hung, who is in a special blue uniform and helping elderly citizens to register for nucleic acid testing.

"Everyone is ready for working in the nucleic acid testing in only over an hour," said Mr. Lau, who was impressed by the large number of well-ordered medical workers and volunteers. "I have seen a strong organizational ability. Although the task is very urgent", he added. After a few hours of work, Mr. Lau felt that the volunteer service team is very professional after seeing medical and protective supplies were continuously being delivered to the front line.

Although born Hong Kong, Mr. Hung regards Guangzhou as another home. He also encouraged other Hong Kong and Macao youths in Guangzhou to participate in the volunteer work, so as to safeguard their home together.

"Most importantly, we should all work together," Mr. Lau said.
