A total of 116 disciplines in 18 Guangdong universities have ranked among the top 1% of Essential Science Indicators (ESI) disciplines - a Guangdong record high, according to the latest data from Clarivate, an analytics company. As Guangdong's economy exerts a global influence, its higher education is also keeping up the pace.

ESI is a compilation of statistics and trends deduced from counts of articles published in scholarly journals and the citations to those articles. It is acknowledged worldwide as an important indicator of an institution's general research level.

Among all Guangdong universities, Sun Yat-sen University and South China University of Technology have maintained their positions in national top 20 and world top 300, with 5 and 4 disciplines ranking in world's top 1‰ respectively.

South China Agricultural University has also joined top 1‰ club with its Botany and Zoology. Additionally, five more disciplines in Guangdong are listed in top 1%.

ESI is published every two months, adding two months' data on the basis of the last data. The statistics of ESI for this time cover from January 1, 2011, to April 30, 2021.
