Shenzhen has unveiled plans to strengthen its transport sector over the next four years, with the aim of developing a smooth, integrated, low-carbon, intelligent, and safe transport network.

By 2025, the city should become a model city in transportation construction in China, according to an action plan officially issued by the Shenzhen Municipal Transport Bureau on Friday.

To achieve this goal, the city will implement 10 actions including boosting seaports, improving the airport’s quality, expanding railway services, enhancing its road network connectivity, integrating transport hubs with urban areas, increasing logistics efficiency and speeding up low-carbon transformation.

The action plan marked the city’s substantial progress in building a transportation model city after it was selected into the national program for building a country with strong transportation in October 2019. It was given the green light by the Ministry of Transport in August 2020 to carry out the construction of a high-quality and innovative international air transport hub.

By 2025, Shenzhen Port’s container throughput will reach 33 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) and its LNG receiving capacity will reach 16 million tons, according to the action plan.

The city’s air passenger turnover will exceed 70 million trips a year, with international passenger turnover exceeding 10 million trips, cargo turnover reaching 2.1 million tons and international air routes exceeding 100.

The city will accelerate the planning and construction of high-speed railways, intercity rails and railroad terminals. The construction of intercity rails and Metro lines will be integrated into the land development in urban areas.

The city will also construct a three-level logistics hub system. By 2025, the added value of the logistics industry will account for 10% of the city’s GDP, and the courier industry will handle about 10 billion parcels a year, as per the plan.
