Internship talent-training bases for Macao students majoring in construction were established Aug 19 at Macao New Neighborhood in Hengqin New Area.

The internship base will provide Macao university students with self-cognition, career planning, and skill training. The interns will apply theoretical knowledge to practical work, and gain hands-on experience.

Meanwhile, a talent training base for prefabricated buildings will cooperate with Macao enterprises and construction talents in professional teaching, scientific research, and application. Macao talents will access more advanced technological means, which is meant to boost the transformation and upgrade of the Macao construction industry.

Wu Chou-kit, president of the Macao Institute of Engineers, said the two facilities offer new opportunities for Macao youth and talents to gain cutting-edge construction management experience and innovative sci-tech application in the Chinese mainland.

He added that in recent years there have been more channels for Macao talents to exchange, receive training, study, and work in the Chinese mainland. This, he said, helps them accumulate working experience, increase personal skills, and have a better understanding of Zhuhai-Macao cooperation.

Chen Xu, director of the Hengqin Ecological Environment & Construction Bureau, said the bureau will stay in close contact with the Macao construction industry to increase international competitiveness and influence of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area construction sector.

Hengqin has been integrating the development of construction sectors between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. Thirty-five Macao enterprises and 154 Macao professionals have been registered in Hengqin since being allowed cross-border practice one and a half years ago. The investment of projects under Macao engineering management modes now exceeds 2.1 billion yuan ($323 million).

The practice of allowing Macao construction enterprises to undertake Chinese mainland government-invested projects was selected as an institutional innovation case exemplifying internationalized business environments in celebration of the sixth anniversary of the Guangdong Free Trade Zone.

In addition, the exploration in cross-border service with Hong Kong and Macao was the only entry from the Guangdong FTZ to be included in the fourth batch of Best FTZ Practice Cases recently released by the Ministry of Commerce.
