New Hengqin port has seen six million passengers in one year operation

Open since August 18 last year, the new Hengqin Port has altogether allowed upwards of 6 million inbound and outbound passengers, and about 900 thousand vehicles, to cross the boundary up to August 13, 2021.

The new Hengqin Port has facilitated the exchanges between Guangdong and Macao. "In the past, when you went to Macao, you had to be checked once at Hengqin port and another time at the opposite Lotus checkpoint in Macao, and you had to take a ferry in between," said Mr. Zhang, a frequent traveller between Macao and Zhuhai, "now it's just way faster. It only takes you a few minutes to clear customs."

With efficient one-time clearance, it is no surprise that people would prefer the new port. Some of the travelers such as teachers and students of University of Macau, who were used to entering Macao through nearer Gongbei Port, have now more often opted for the new Hengqin Port, according to on-the-spot interviews.

For the past year, the new port has taken up an increasing number of clearances for both passengers and vehicles.So far, 30,000 passengers and 4000 vehicles go through the port daily. And of all vehicles, cars licensed in Macao make up over 50%, amounting to 2000 - a record high.
