14 Guangdong universities included in top 1000 universities in the world

Recently, 14 Guangdong universities were included in the top 1000 in the 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, and among all provinces/regions in the Chinese mainland, Guangdong ranked 3rd in number, next to Jiangsu and Beijing.

First published in 2003 as the world's first comprehensive university ranking, ARWU presents the global top 1,000 research universities annually according to six objective indicators, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics and number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science.

This year, Sun Yat-sen University, one of the top universities in Southern China, was for the first time ranked in the top 100. And another 7 out of 13 made it into the top 500, marking a step forward on Guangdong's overall academic level.

Besides the long-time leaders Sun Yat-sen University and South China University of Technology, other such burgeoning voices as Shenzhen University, Guangdong University of Technology and Southern University of Science and Technology, have represented ever more flourishing examples of Guangdong's higher education.

It's worth mentioning that a total of 157 universities from the Chinese mainland were included in this year's ARWU list, with 35 included in the top 300, 7 in the top 100. The number of universities in the top 100 tied for third place with Australia, after the US and the UK.
