A GROUP of young people from Hong Kong have been active as volunteers on the frontline of Shenzhen’s COVID control efforts. Many of them recently moved into a Hong Kong and Macao Youth Community, Shenzhen Evening News reported yesterday.
Located at Shennan Square in Luohu District, the community is the first of its kind in China that provides affordable accommodation to youths from Hong Kong and Macao, the News reported.
It provides 20 apartments for Hong Kong and Macao youths working in Shenzhen. The apartment type is divided into those with two rooms, three rooms and four rooms, with a construction area of about 86 square meters to 142 square meters.
Tenants can get a 40% discount based on market prices, and each apartment’s rent ranges from 4,472 yuan (US$703) to 7,386 yuan per month.
During the latest wave of COVID resurgence, the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League of China and Shenzhen Volunteer Association issued an appeal for volunteer services.
In just two days, a Hong Kong volunteer team was established with the help of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Youth Innovation Center, UNI Hong Kong Youth Entrepreneurship Space and Shenzhen-Hong Kong Youth Association, the News reported.
The Hong Kong youths worked as volunteers at a housing compound in Luohu’s Nanhu Subdistrict, helping residents take COVID tests, checking their health codes, and doing other chores in epidemic control.
The team served 20,000 people a day on average. They took turns working from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.
Since March this year, 189 Hong Kong volunteers have registered in Shenzhen. Among them, 84 have participated in epidemic prevention services.
